I needed privacy higher than my 6' fence could provide so last March I planted 12 crepe myrtles and 12 wax myrtles along the fence line.

The wax myrtles were only about 18" high after planting and the crepe myrtles were about 5' high after planting.

Right now, the wax myrtles are 5'-7' high and getting thick and the crepe myrtles are 6'-7' tall. Of course, the crepe myrtles are deciduous so no leaves right now but wax myrtles are ever greens and stay green and thick all year long. The way they've grown over the past year makes me 100% expect that they will be well over 8' tall by August and I have a feeling the crepe myrtles will grow another 2' this year as well.

By the end of year 2, I should have a very thick and tall living privacy fence creating a nice oasis in my back yard. Just wanted to give the OB folks a heads up before planting season begins in case anyone is in need of a good living privacy fence.

i put a natchez crepe myrtle as the centerpiece of my land scaping when i moved in 6 years ago. it has been a diaster.

every year it grows nicely, barely blooms (not enough sun), but then the aphids and black mold sets in. I treat it, kill them, and they come back later the next year.

i hate the thing.

i'm going to transplant it and either go with a dwarf magnolia or wax myrtle.

I have never seen wax myrtles with those kind of seeds/fruits on it.

That's not a wax myrtle.

I had the same issue this fall. I kept having to treat it but it would come right back. I'm hoping next year is different.

Damn you to hell! My heart literally skipped a beat or two when I scrolled down and saw that picture!

By the way, I spray them every month with Lambdastar 9.7 Ultracap -- that stuff has a good residual that kills wasps. I also spray the underside of all my eaves on my home and shed. Wasp nests are 99% non-existent on my property now.

I know it is not, that is my point. I have been cutting cedeas all my life and have never hit a wasp nest in a live one. Now, when I get to my blind for the first time the next year, those frickers will be in there if they have a little bit of cover.

Man, I think I’m going this route. I need a lot so may be growing them from seeds. Can you share some photos of how they’ve progressed?

I'll see if I can get some pics later and will update the thread if I can.

Where did you get them from? Local nursery, online?

Also, what spacing is best for using it as a privacy shrub?

I bought them from Cleggs in BR (I believe wax myrtles were 19/piece for about 18" high). I spaced mine about 8-10 feet apart but only because I really needed privacy in the areas I planted them. I planted the wax myrtles in a couple specific corners and the crepe myrtles were placed about 12 feet apart along the entire fence line.

You can dig them up just about anywhere along the bayou. I have quite a few lil ones growing on my lot next door along with some cane reeds.

I planted 75 clumping bamboo plants 3 feet apart...... should be a solid wall shortly. I still need to plant another 200 or so

Except for the fact that it looks like you hired Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder to plant them. Did you mean for them to zig zag like that?
