Picked up a tow pig to pull my Jeep to the trails. Any fuel additives you would recommend? First time I’ve owned a diesel. I’m going to change the injectors and have the motor overhauled in general. Is there anything else you can tell me about her and things I should be doing? What oil too?

Any good 15W40 diesel oil will be fine. Main thing is filters, filters, and filters. And running a good coolant like red Shell Rotella ELC.

Shell Rotella and change your fuel filters about every 6 months.

On that model, keep a crank position sensor behind the seat and a 10 mm wrench. I put over 350K on one of those and it goes out about every 50K. Only takes about 10 min to change though.

Is yours post '94? That's when they added turbo. I sold my old one when I bought a new truck in 2005 and hated that I did ever since. I've tried to buy it back from the lady about 10 times and she won't budge.

You got yourself a good 'un.

Dont get below a quarter of a tank of fuel.
Get ts performance chip, 4 in exhaust, and get a good aftermarket air filter.
Change fuel filter.

Yeah, 01 7.3 turbo. Had a bit of a lag when cranking it up so I went to Walmart and bought two new batteries. I changed them in the parking lot. Well that wasn’t the problem. She’s now sitting in the parking lot and won’t start. Going to pick up a starter in the morning if I can find one in town. I’ll have to run up to the shop and grab a creeper and a few wrenches.

Not sure if that they has a water separator but if it doesn't you might want to see if you can install one.

I know on the Duramax there is a nice after market pickup and separator you can install for water and to help increase the life of the injectors.

Buddy at work got water in his fuel and his high pressure fuel pump came apart and ruined his fuel system. Wasn't pretty.

Go to ford truck enthusiast.com look up the 99-03 7.3 forum. lots of good info to be found and helpful people.
I have a 99 7.3. It likes shell rotella 15/40 oil. I think it lasts better than some cheaper oil. I run mobil one oil filters and whatever fuel filter, just change it every 10k.
make sure you have a full oil level or these trucks don't run right.
if the truck runs bad or dies below 1/4 tank of fuel, your pick up in the tank is broken.
look up riff-raff diesel. they sell the best replacement parts way cheaper than the ford dealer.
you can ohm out the injectors and glow plugs through the 42 pin connecter on the drivers side valve cover. check the wires there for rubbing on the valve cover also.

I would recommend Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant. It will help to prevent Algae build up in the fuel.

Yeah pickup is bad. It’s on order. Took the bed off to access the tank. Of course that meant replacing a few bolts, a few clips and a t50 bit (thank god for lifetime warranty from snap on).

Replaced all Tie rods, ends, ball joints and shocks today. Tomorrow, I’ll do the alignment then I’ll change the hood, fenders, lamps and bumpers. Should be in paint by Wednesday.

Btw, the top bolt on that motherfricking starter is a bitch.

Look up the hutch and harpoon mod. You can cut off the fill tube in the tank with a pvc cutter. That will allow you to put several more gallons of fuel in.
Also a good idea to do away with the snap on fuel line fittings by the pump that will suck air.
Another good mod I did is hook up a 12v LED to the out side of my glow plug relay. That way you know when the glow plug cycle is finished the warm up and will let you know if the relay stops working.the glow plugs will stay on almost 2 minutes when its cold out.

I got a 97 7.3 turbo. I been having for 10 years. Old farmer told me to put transmission fluid as fuel additive. It works really good.

A disclaimer to that: DO NOT do this with a modern diesel engine.

Any engine requiring ulsd for sure. At best it will soot up the EGR system and if the truck has it itll fail the exhaust system. A 7.3 is likely ok, but i still dont recommend it.

You should not have to crack and bleed the fuel lines. The fuel pressure regulator is kind of like a check valve with a spring on the out line of the fuel filter bowl. You should probably just cycle the key a few times to let it fill up and build up pressure.
There are 2 filter screens in the tank along the pick up that need to be cleaned if not replaced.

As far as fuel additives, I just run a bottle of diesel kleen through from time to time.

You don't really need an aftermarket air cleaner either. A good high flow filter will give you all the air flow you need to run the turbo. Stay away from the aftermarket filter you can clean. any time you can see through an air filter it cant be stopping dust from getting through.

IMO, unless you building a race truck, you don't need 4" or bigger exhaust. Stock pipes are 3.5" already. I did cut off the muffler and strait piped mine.

also I did put a ts 6 position tuner on my truck. But know that with stock injectors you really cant use more than the 50 or 70 hp tune. stock injectors will not take enough fuel past that. thoughbred diesel is where I got my chip.
