Kayak in the chaff? Dude you got balls...that river has the strongest current in the state. I've fished catfish via trot line for years launching out of Melville. Did you notice any sway when you crossed a whirlpool? I've felt the rear of an 18' aluminum boat sway crossing a whirlpool when the river was high. No way in hell

I keep an eye out for water boils or confused water and try to work around them. I felt it grab my rudder one time, but nothing significant. At 18 feet long and only 19 inches wide not much of the boat is in the water for the current to grab.

Only white knuckle part was an intense head wind for a few miles that was enough of an issue form me to get out of the channel and skirt the bank for a while.

Will be paddling the Missouri river in 6 weeks so this was a training run. The Missouri is bigger with a much faster current.

I'm headed to the chaf this afternoon. Not in a yak though- going set lines.

I was curious about something. Why does a head wind make it more dangerous.

When I was younger we would put in at Krotz Springs and go down river, find a sand bar and pitch a tent. Catch catfish, drink, light a fire, and hang out. Were great times. That was before I got caught up in the business world and now wonder sometimes if life was better when I was just getting by....

When you have a head wind that is blowing strong against a fast opposing current, it causes water to stack up or become very choppy with inconsistent white caps.

My touring yak is 18 feet long and only 19 inches wide so it is very tippy due to not really having a flat bottom. Also, the rim of my cockpit only sits about 4 inches above the water line. It really all comes down to keeping you balance; the front of the boat may be going up over a wave, while the back sinks down, while a wave hits you for the side, while your trying to paddle in water that's raising up and down while keeping your balance. A simple mistake and you flip.

Trying to keep the bow pointed into the waves while Trying to keep an eye out for waves coming over the side and into the cockpit can be tricky all the time, but especially while going around bends in a river.

I have a skirt that seals the cockpit, but it's want bad enough to stop to put it on. I took three wave over the side into the cockpit, but they were small.

In a taller, wider/ more stable kayak it wouldn't be as big of an issue.

I posted about flipping in the MS river during a race last year and getting washed out of the river down a spillway. It was due to the same, but much stronger winds .

shite, I'd never experienced that but did yesterday. Couldn't believe how choppy the river was.

It was also BY FAR the lowest and least amount of current I'd seen.

It's freakin low. The first launch is not even open right now. We only caught 5 catfish. Two around 5 lbs. Was in the top 3 of my worst river trips ever.

I've never slept on a sand bar but plan to. Are the mosquitos bad? There's one where I fish the Mississippi that's 100 yards from the trees/grass. I'd think that one would be pretty mosquito free but would bring some permethrin in a sprayer to make sure.

I just had time to update this so I thought some might be interested.

In the file linked you can see that from plot 17 on, we stayed right at the edge of the water instead of in the normal "faster water" in the channel. That was done to avoid the head-wind issues. The plots are 10 minutes apart so we did not cross land as it looks like, that's just the straight line between the plots.

Saw 6-10 dead fish and all where 3 feet long or better. One had to be close to 5 feet in length
