Thinking about buying an AR and instead of the .223 I’m wondering if the .224 Valkyrie is worthwhile? I think I just like the name and the idea of having something a little different. Ammo is less readily available so that’s a problem. Anyone with experience with this caliber?

I have one with a 20” Wilson Barrel. Shoots like a laser. Ammo has been readily available. My son used it tge last 2 years to deer hunt and I use it for hogs as well.

Is it any different feel than a .223?

My opinion is that unless you are going to try to shoot prairie dogs or coyotes from 500 yards+ or become long range competition shooter, then 224 Valkyrie is waste considering the ammo is more expensive, it isn’t as flat shooting as the 223 at normal shooting and hunting distances, and I reckon the performance in game animals is very similar. If you want something to poke bigger holes in bigger animals with an AR up to 250 yards, there’s the 6.5 Grendel. If you want to put really big holes from 150 yards in, there’s the 458 Socom. This is America so get whichever one makes you happy.

Have we settled the 6.8 vs 6.5g debate yet?

Seems the Grendel was the better load.

Hunting rounds are very similar in price. I picked up some federal fusion 90 gr from Midway last month for $20 a box. The BC for the .224 is far superior to the .223/5.56. We have killed numerous deer and hogs without any issues of the animal getting away.

It’s a great caliber for kids to hunt with as well. Little to no recoil and has similar energy of a 243 out to 300 yards.

Great to hear. Rifle selection is a lot more limited and I don’t see ammo on the shelf at academy but I do see it online. It’d be mostly for my 8 yr old son who can’t handle my 308.

The .223 remington, 5.56 nato and .224 valkyrie are the same caliber. They all use .224 bullets. The 224 valkyrie was designed to shoot longer heavier higher BC bullets and still fit in an AR-15 magazine. It has largely been a flop. It just doesn’t outshine the .223 unless you want to shoot targets past 600 yards.

Pretty much as stated above, it’s designed to shoot 22 caliber bullets that are much heavier than traditional. Fast twist rate allows the much longer and heavier bullets to stabilize. That’s why it shines at the long range game.
