.22 sub-sonic ammo sound review

Alright, well as promised here are the results of me testing out three different kinds of "quiet" ammo out there.
From left to right: CCI Ammunition 22 Long 29 Grain Lead Round Nose, Aguila Super Colibri Ammunition 22 Long Rifle 20 Grain Lead Solid Point, Aguila SSS Sniper Subsonic Ammunition 22 Long Rifle 60 Grain Lead Round Nose, .40S&W WWB
First, I tested them out of my SIG Mosquito. Results were all three were loud as frick and I should have been wearing hearing protection. oh well.
So, I went and grabbed my 10/22 and the extra barrel length made a whole hell of a lot of difference. Here is the order of quietest to loudest:
1. Aguila Super Colibri Ammunition 22 Long Rifle 20 Grain Lead Solid Point. Very quiet for a .22. The report had kind of a softer air gunny feel to it. Does not cycle my 10/22 action. I could shoot these all day in my back yard without any neighbors noticing.
2. CCI Ammunition 22 Long 29 Grain Lead Round Nose. Not quite as quiet as the Super Colibri but still around the same as a higher powered air gun. The report from this round is a little harder and has more of a little crack to it. Does not cycle my 10/22. These probably wouldn't stir up too much curiosity from the neighbors, but definitely louder than the Super Colibris.
3. Aguila SSS Sniper Subsonic Ammunition 22 Long Rifle 60 Grain Lead Round Nose. By far the loudest. Not as loud as a regular .22LR and no where near as quiet as the Super Colibri. I would stay away from these if quiet .22ing is what you are after. Does not cycle in my 10/22.
Next time I can get to a decent range I will let you guys know how each shoots. But for pest control in my backyard I'll be using the Super Colibris.

Have you tried the Remington Subsonics? I shoot Rems. Wax Coated Lead hollow points.
I was told by a class 3 manufacturer/retailer about problems with Aguila ammo feeding and clearing rifle barrels. FWIW...

Thanks... Gonna get me some Aguila Super Colibri for cat control.

I shot some remington .22 high velocity shorts the other day because they were cheap. About the same noise level as a standard velocity .22 lr round.

I think it needs a little cleaning. For what I need it, cycling isn't necessary with the Super Colibri.
Fetched the thread to avoid repeating any shyt.

Super Colibri.
So I take it these little dinky things are safe to shoot out of a long-barreled rifle? I always assumed they were for pistols only. What's the velocity on em?

As in this is a .22 long rifle sized round or that it is safe to shoot in long rifles?
I'm kinda iffy on em. I think I'll just stick to the CB shorts. The accuracy is somewhat disappointing with them though. I may have to try the regular .22 longs. I love quiet .22 bullets.

Yea I doubt the noise reduction is much over the CB shorts anyway, and I know the CBs are safe. I think I'll just stick with them. I can shoot a 30-06 at my house without pissing anybody off, so it'd be pretty stupid of me to risk it. I have a 22 pistol that would probably be really cool to shoot these things out of though.

Just a recap, all three were very loud out of a pistol. The barrel just isn't long enough to damper the sound. As far as shooting out of the rifle bbl, I have not had any problems yet. At first they made me nervous, now I'm starting to trust them. However, do your own research this is not a recommendation from me to shoot any of these out of a long bbl. Where can I get CB shorts so I can compare them to what I already have? Walmarks? Academy?
Posted on 6/14/11 at 12:02 pm to Propagandalf
get mine from academy. Shoot them out of my single shot Stevens. Not much more than a pop

Propagandalf,
Thanks for the info. What did you find out w/:
Accuracy of the ammo?
Point of impact w/ the ammo vs hi velocity 22 lr?
The only time I tried the Super Colibri, the point of impact was so much lower compared to regular 22 lr high velocity (Super Colibri hit about 2 feet lower at 10 yards) that using it would require having a gun sighted in for it exclusively.

This made me laugh out load. Nice project though.

Sorry for dragging up an old thread, but I'm still curious what the OP found out about the accuracy and point of impact w/ the subsonic rounds.

I've been busy lately and haven't really had a chance to do much shooting. I'll try to get around to it within the next few days. I know the Super Colibri is rated at 500fps and the CCI stuff is supposed to be 750fps. As someone mentioned earlier I am dedicating one of my .22s to be sighted for shooting these loads. It would be too much trouble to re-sight when you wanted to use regular velocity ammo and I have a surplus of .22 rifles anyway.
Posted on 6/20/11 at 2:09 pm to TigerOnThe Hill
My rig is sighted in for standard velocity .22 lr (1050 fps), and it shoots CB shorts about 1/4" low at 35 yards. Accuracy isn't as good as the match .22 lr's, but it is more than adequate for squirrels.

quote:There was another thread about these recently and it was clearly stated that they are for short distances. I had two of those miniature cigarette lighters in my truck so I stood them up at 20 yards and my scope was on for both.

I'm partial to these.
Too loud for backyard use.
Tried the colibris and I could see them drop off at about 20 yards.
