His parents met at LSU. His mom played for Sweden in the Olympics which allowed him to participate for them. Documentary said the Swedish track and field officials would allow his parents to coach him.

Looking from it from his side though. It’s your job. One company is going to give you all the health insurance you will need, if you get hurt, they aren’t gonna replace you for someone not as good. They are going to let you bring in your own team to work with. The pay is going to be better. You will have more opportunities to bring in funding from other sources because you are in a market that doesn’t have as many competitors. You get access to the European tournaments. Other-side you got a great big tough schucks if you get hurt. You have to deal with their staff that may not fit your style of training. Lots more competition from athletes in more popular events for shoe deals and sponsors. He chose a much better employer. Loyalty is for suckers in the corporate world today.

This is all fine, but I would also argue that he chose for the American audience to root for someone else.

I agree, his Turkish shooter memeing would work well as an American influencer. He’s got the look to draw a big audience here.

Posted this in the other Mondo thread, but this one has more traffic.

Just watched the feature on him.

Mom (the one who’s actually Swedish) has the most Cajun accent in the family - by far. It’s kinda funny actually.

The Swedes like their crawfish parties too. Way different flavor profile though.

I bet you know who Michael Johnson and Michelle kwan are.

i do, but i'm a sports fan...

but if you think you can ask 10 random arse people who these people are, and get an actually response to the affirmative, then you are massively overestimating how popular these people are...

I decided to message a few Swede friends I have through gaming. Only one knew he was a gold medalist, but didn’t know what event. The rest had to Google him. None of them keep track of the Summer Olympics, they knew who Zlatan was though right away.

That really surprises me to be honest.

I think Gu is a good comparison. She was all over China and NBC. Mondo had a reality show and what? Does he have a bunch of endorsements? If he had vaulted for the US he'd have a fat Nike contract and would be one of the highlighted athletes on NBC.

Difference is:

He doesn't know who you are.
