Top Kill is Officially a Failure, BP Announces

Now what? Doesn't every idea after this have less of a chance of working?

Next they come up with another dog and pony show that appeases the masses while they continue with the only solution. The relief well.

The next step I believe is to cut off the riser to centralize the leaks and retry a modified containment dome

Get a shite load more mud and keep doing top kill. At least its reducung the oil flow to the surface.

They could possibly try tying into the drill pipe sticking out the end of the riser and doing a "top kill" that route. They would at least generate a little hydrostatic head that way.

any chance they'll just let all the oil flow out? I have a feeling that's what they wanted to do since the beginning.

I dunno what they are capable of at that depth...but alternatively, cut off the riser, and weld a new one vertically 50-100 feet tall or so, and then do the top kill on THAT.
There's you nice column of hydrostatic head.
I dunno if however you try coupling the two pieces can handle that kind of pressure though.

They would probably be waiting about 20 or 30 years.

No
Not only is it completely impractical, it would be one of the absolutely dumbest strategies ever with regard to a company's bottom line.
I mean it would be stupid move at the level as to make Custer look like a tactical genius by comparison.

well I think they said on CNN last night that the next method is to cut off the tip and get a cap
Posted on 5/29/10 at 5:33 pm to Volvagia
If they take that route then they would cut the drill pipe out too, set a packer and bull head.
I'm not even sure they have equipment capable of cutting through a drilling riser. You are talking about a massive amount of steel.

I have a feeling that this isnt going to stop until the relief well's are put on line. About 3 mo's from now. I hope im wrong ,but all these other things just aren't going to work at that depth. This is horrible.

what else is new? not attacking you but BP has been blowing smoke from the get go.

BP has been trying to get the media and the public off their backs while the relief wells are drilled.

It isn't going to be that long.....

Just like the physicist I saw on TV last night said, "this is one big experiment and we're the guinea pigs." BP is simply not equipped for this type of disaster. And for us to put our hopes on them was a shot in the dark, at best.
We might as well prepare to mop up the mess headed our way as best we can. Although I doubt we'll be able to capture even a small percentage of it. Just like the financial industry, profits are privatized, losses are socialized.
The citizens will have to pay, one way or another. Mr President, use the bully pulpit to encourage Americans to buy automobiles with better gas mileage. Encourage Americans to carpool. Encourage Americans to be smater with their driving habits. I'm sick of getting screwed again. And I'm sick of sending billions of our dollars to wall street and Saudi Arabia.

yep. remember it was going to be 2 months to drill the relief well? we are nearly a month and a half into that and they are saying august for the relief well, which is 2 months away, and their still is no guarantee.

They are around 11,000 feet with the first relief well. Why would it be August?

Get off your soapbox hippy. You think a Prius driving nation would have somehow stopped this from happening? Idiot.
