Sitting on the sea floor close to the leak on the riser. The engineers are making sure that everything is hooked up right so they can avoid the slush problem with the larger containment dome. Will be put in place my ROV tomorrow sometime.

I want to thank everyone for their posts on here -- the oil rig / oil field knowledge on tigerdroppings has been wonderful and I feel as though I have had an oil rig 101 course from you guys.

So I ask you all -- does this "top hat" strategy, which you oil and gas guys seem to like better than the first very large dome -- does it have any chance of working? What are the educated odds?

90/10% 60/40% 10/90% What is realistic to expect for those of us who love the gulf but are powerless to help in any way.

The BP CEO was asked this very questions and he cleverly responded that "you don't put odds on something that has never been done before" so I'm guessing that's the same response they would give for this one too!

2/98 % I hope but I don't it will. If you ask me they shouldn't risk knocking the BOP off and pumping methanol in the water isn't good for the environment either.

This top hat is not going over the BOP, it is going over the leak in the riser. I'd say 50/50 no reason to put any odds outside of that on something so new.

pumping methanol in the water

i believe the methanol would be pumped inside the dome to keep hydrates from forming in there. the methanol would then be entrained in the oil going to surface and being collected by the Enterprise.

yeah but it's designed channel 85% at best to the surface. Or was that the first one?

the 85% figure is because the other active leak represents the other 15%. So they are thinking the top hat could catch 100% of the 85% leak.

If successful, I think they plan for another one to be placed over the 15% leak soon thereafter.

The 15% figure makes that leak seem small, but that represents 450 Barrells of oil/day!

Yeah - I heard that on an internet clip that the BP CEO didn't want to put odds on it.

Frankly - I trust you guys on here more than anything I've seen or heard from BP or on the media....

I guess a long shot is better than no shot at all?

looks like they will attempt to run a line down and vaccuum oil straight from the pipes first according to yahoo news. Very similiar to what I asked (if that was feasible last week) and got cussed out. Sounds like something that could have been done day one.

If that works, it would be very depressing that they did not try it first.

No shite!!! Everybody's first inclination was to just cut the existing pipe and hook it up to another pipe on a drillship. How could they have overlooked this idea? maybe the circumstances or dynamics of the outflow have changed? more gas and less crude or vice versa?

It is beginning to sound like BP hasnt got the slightest idea what they are gonna do. I currently think they are just messing around till the relief well is finished.

I saw on FOX NEWs that the top hat was also icing and causing it to float and not be able to make it sit properly on the sea floor so this may be a failure as well. This pumping technique seems to be the #3 try and they need to do it fast. We are reaching critical mass here....time to throw the sink at it or we are in a bind!!!!

I am getting nervous myself
