that's a lot of drill ships and semi's to be sitting around idle.

i wonder when operators will start claiming force mageure on the contracts?

They wont be sitting around idle, trust me, they're going overseas, or as far away from the GOM as possible.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The Obama administration plans to announce on Thursday a suspension of offshore oil drilling in the Arctic until 2011 as a result of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, an Alaska senator said.

i don't doubt that some will head down to brazil or across to africa; however, i think a lot will depend on what people envision happening in 6 months when this moratorium expires. what are the chances it won't be lifted, but rather extended? or that new regulations would be too difficult to comply w/. i don't know, i'm just speculating obviously.

i would say the decision to haul one of these rigs down over to brazil, africa, the north sea or offshore newfoundland is not made lightly. it's a huge cost and time to transit (if self propelled) or haul it up there on a carrier then back here.

what i know for certain, is it will be very difficult to convince people to work in the deepwater gulf of mexico as company men and toolpushers.

this is really going to hammer the ranks of service hands -- guys working for baker, halliburton, schlumberger, etc.

hopefully they'll be able to shuffle guys around to other areas to keep them working in the short term.

What if Exxon or Shell already have a permit to do a deepwater well. Will they have to hold off? Or does this mean no new permits will be issued?

Permit or not, they are not allowing them to drill new wells.

It's all based on contracts. If they sign a big enough contract they will bolt in a heartbeat.

Lease sales in the Western Gulf and East Coast canceled
Moratorium on new DW drilling permits (may impact shelf as well)
Suspension of 33 DW wells currently drilling

Moratorium and suspensions until a commission completes a study on operational procedures, safety and environmental study requirements.

Not happy time in the GoM

The contract day rates are going to start dropping rapidly. The deepwater rigs will be moving. The cost of them sitting idle far out ways the cost of moving them to other regions.

I didn't have time to watch the conference. One of our guys in our NOLA office sent out a summary of the main points to me so I could be aware of some of the stuff coming down. This was just copied from the email he sent me.

Here is an article if you need more assurance that I know a little of what I'm talking about.

I know this is horrible news for the people who work the rigs and the associated businesses.

A selfish question, what will this do to the price of oil/gas in the short term? Will we see a spike like we did a couple of years ago during hurricane season, or will the impact be smaller since (I'm assuming) existing wells that are producign can continue to produce, but untapped sources won't be extracted for a while?

Should we continue to drill in deep water when an ongoing oil spill has been leaking for 37 days?

Lets get everything organized and safety precautions before drilling in deep water. Seems like a smart move to me.

BP has already screw up the ecosystem.

IMO we won't see immediate price increase. This impact will hurt the oilfield support industry immediately. The long term damage will be to new develops which will be delayed.

Basically there will be many who have lost their jobs.
