Tenn, my understanding was that they had designed and were in the process of building 3 or 4 different caps. One was the so-called flange-to-flange cap where they did have to remove the upper flange and replace it with the cap. There was an alternate design that sounds like the one you're talking about where it sort of clamped over the lower flange but the upper flange did not need to be removed. As of a couple of weeks ago, they hadn't made a final decision about which one to use but Kent Wells said that the flange-to-flange design was gaining favor. A lot could have changed since then however.

Had a discussion about BP going to produce the well with the relief wells. This is not possible correct? The well is not structurally sound, they will be completely cementing it through the relief wells and the zone its self may be damaged. If they were to produce this zone they would have to drill a new well? Between the spill and the damn Messiah and the Mexicans I gave up watching the news 2-3 weeks ago so not up to date on the latest.

Mtn. My understanding was the first option was to take those bolts out and put a new fitting on.
If they could not remove bolts safely, then the clamp on over the top would be the next option. The only thing not decided on at the time of my last conversation was the design and type of material that the seal would be made of and who who make it. A very important piece. I believe the seal is what being tested in a couple of days. My take is that BP is exploring every possibility and has been all along. Hope this gets it done. I think of all the fishing I did
in the marshes south of N O and it really saddens me to know its going away.

I never watch the news and yet feel I'm relatively up to speed on this thing. Draw your own conclusions. :)

I'm not sure how the rumor that they would use the relief wells for production ever got started but it needs to die. They are going to kill the wild well and then in Kent Wells own words, "fill it full of cement." Could they come back to one of the relief wells later, sidetrack and use it for production? Probably. But the only thing they seem to be focused on right now is killing the well and shutting it in.

Tenn, gotcha. That makes sense to me, thanks.
