Need a little help to understand

Just a few questions:
1) Will the relief wells actually cut through the production casing string or will they just get close?
2) Once the relief wells are at their target what happens next? Do the try to draw down the pressure before pumping mud and then cement or immediately proceed to trying to kill the well?
3) Is the blowout well flowing up the annulus or up the casing?
4) How long do you think it would take to put together new drilling/completion requirements so that deep water offshore drilling can resume?
I think I could have gathered representatives of most of the GOM players and come up with what is needed to be changed in a short period of time, perhaps 2 weeks. I am sure the engineers representing the oil companies know what needs to be done to minimize the chances of something like this from happening again.
5) Would you consider serving on an oversight committee that would have the opportunity to question our Congress over some of their decisions? I would jump at the opportunity.

how would they go about pumping mud & cement into the blownout well if they don't cut through the casing?

I have heard that well is blowing out up the annulus. I guess you would want to fill annulus and casing with cement.

when they get to the well bore, they will change from a regular drill bit to a drill bit that will bore a hole in the metal casing. Then the two relief wells will drill a hole in the casing on both sides

after they enter the well bore, they will pump mud into the casing and fill up the well bore above and below their entry points. Then they will pump cement and attempt to fill the well bore and the immediate formation with cement which will kill the well

3) Is the blowout well flowing up the annulus or up the casing?
they suspect there is a casing rupture at the near bottom hole but there is no way to really be sure

OOChas all the information on the necessary guidelines and changes in hand. it would just be a matter of presenting it to an oversight Committee and the Coast Guard/MMS to get it approved.

sure I would but I would imagine it would be an exercise in frustration and futility

Thanks for the information. That helps me understand the process. I have a Pet Eng degree but have been in West Texas since graduation (30+ years). GOM and in particular deep water operations amaze me with the technology. This board has provided alot of insight into what is actually happening and I appreciate the contributors (those with knowledge).
