Watching Skandi ROV2, looks like the oil is on fire. Are they burning it??
I believe that is the yellow top hat you are seeing. As the oil capture increases the yellow top hat's body becomes visible because the curtain of oil around it grows thinner.

Could be the angle of the cameras but I noticed when the sat the tophat on the BOP you could rarely, if any, see the fins on the tophat. Now noticing more fin showing. Hope this is an indication that more oil is being captured.

In case you didn't know. They have been ramping up toward 18,000 barrels a day and are almost maxed out on the ship.
Next week they will start sending oil to another ship via the choke and kill lines. This ship (Q4000) will burn both the oil and gas that it collects. They expect to have a combined cabability of 28000 barrels a day.
I believe just from looking at the video that they will be capturing 80% or more of the oil at that point. Just my guess.

That's encouraging omegaman.
It does appear that the flow is much less than when they first put on the cap. Also, I believe that the Q4000 is a rig platform, not a ship (not that it really matters).

The Q4000 will start up the second containment operation then the Clear Leader will take over.
Long term: Toisa Pisces and Helix Producer with shuttle tankers are the options. The suction pile is scheduled to be installed end of this week.
They continue to recover production to the Enterprise. They have produced approximately 7800 bbls of oil over the past 12 hours. They are currently on a 206/64 choke and plan to continue to increase the choke size in order to optimize production to the Enterprise.
They continue to offload oil from the Enterprise to the Massachusetts. They have offloaded 104,000 bbls to date to the Massachusetts. The Massachusetts will remain hooked up to the Enterprise until they have offloaded 120,000 bbls. They will bring in the shuttle tanker Cascade once the Massachusetts reaches the 120,000 bbls.
THis program is working pretty well. The long-term containment should be even more efficient.

I'M so stupid the camera shots look the same to me as they did previously. what are you guys seeing that i'm not. i know i'll probably get flamed for asking this but i don't see the improvement.

It doesn't look a whole lot different partly because the oil flow has decreased so slowly that you don't notice. Sort of like watching a plant grow.
But the main reason is the oil boiling out the bottom of the cap seems to looks the same if it is 30K or 10K a day.
But although it looks the same the thickness of the curtain of oil going up is less. But unless it is so thin that you can see through it then it isn't noticable at all.
The best indicator is to look at how far down the oil is shooting out of the cap. Well you can't see the cap so how do you know??? You can compare it to the BOP since the cap is relatively stationary. There is a yellow disk that looks like an old compass that would be found on an very old ship. The oil originally what boiling out almost to that. Occasional whisp of oil would pass between it and the camera.
Not however no oil is coming anywhere close to that yellow disk. Also I remember watching and you could see the tips of 2 fins with the third fin from the cap not always visible. Now all three fins are exposed a noticable amount more.
I haven't been able to find old video of the early days of the cap. This is all done from memory. So if anyone has a link to some old video clips of the top hat that would help.

Mostly just the fact that you can sometimes see the cap through the curtain of oil now. Before, it was so thick that you could never even get a glimpse of the cap itself and you could barely even see the fins at the bottom of it.

On the Skandi Rov 2 anybody know what that flat curved material is that flapping around in the flow? Is that new or has it been there all along ?
Posted on 6/10/10 at 3:33 pm to TexTiga
Tex, I don't recall seeing it before. Maybe it was there all along but under the oil curtain. No idea what it is/was.
Posted on 6/10/10 at 3:36 pm to MountainTiger
Kinda looks like a piece of a gasket or something ?
Posted on 6/10/10 at 4:01 pm to TexTiga
Whatever it is (top hat gasket) it wasn't visible in the early stages or it just blended in when it occasionally flapped into view.

It does look like a gasket or at least a sheet of gasket material. Does it appear to you to be caught under that fin?
I can hear it now. ZOMG!! THE GASKET IS BUSTED!! NOW OIL IS GOING TO LEAK EVERYWHERE!!!

The first is from 4 days ago when some oil was being captured. The second link is to the live feed currently showing the same camera position.
Dramatic difference in the oil. I think next weeks improvements will have the leak down to as low as we can hope for.
Agreed. It appears to me that most of the oil is coming out of two lines on opposite sides of the actual riser pipe. Are those the choke and kill lines? If so, flow from them should slow to just about nil once the Q4000 starts producing.

Material from the junk shot

Posted on 6/10/10 at 4:35 pm to TexTiga
Anyone know what those Posedian ROV's are doing with that riser ?

Material from the junk shot Just guessing?
I wouldn't think so. I don't think they'd use something that big for fear of plugging up the lines.

No idea. Is that the piece of riser that was cut off?

Could be . Wonder if they are going to bring it topside ? BP needs to put a narrator on here .
