Anybody have any links to show how a BOP is supposed to work?

Also links to animation to explain how the accident happened and the various options being planned to plug the spill (relief well, dome etc.) will be great to watch and learn for somebody that is not well informed on the subject.

TIA!

We don't know.

Any animation would be a waste of time.

Basic schematic of a BOP:

Don't worry about the rest of the stuff, you'll find yourself way in over your head fast if you do. The points of interest here are the shear rams, the blind rams, and the annular preventer.

The blind rams are not relevant to this problem. It is a valve for shutting the well when there is no drill pipe present.

The annular preventer would have been useful here and it is one of the things that didn't shut It is basically a variable ring that can close and seal over drill pipes of various sizes. I believe they sealed one of the leaks by manually closing this by ROV

The big question is why the shear rams did not work. They are supposed to be end all emergency shutdown, with the ability to cut a drill pipe if needed in the process of closing the well. The failure of this to function correctly is the crux of the problem here. It is entirely possible that it was damaged by unprecedented high pressures involved in the blowout.

FWIW, here is a picture of a subsea BOP e-mailed to be by my father during Chevron's Tahiti deployment that is probably very similar to what Deepwater Horizon has. As you can see....they aren't small.

Not sure what exactly you are looking for.

Asking for the actual mechanics of how it works is a lot like asking how does a computer circuit board works while not understanding what a transistor is.

Was at their "booth" at OTC yesterday. They had many animations on the subject playing. Their setup was probably the best one there in my opinion.
