Slightly off topic, but I was checking out a nautical map of the spill area and found this eye opener. Some of you offshore fishermen might already know this, but there are two "disused" explosives dumping areas off the coast of Louisiana, one very near the rig accident and another just to the west of that. Did a little googling and found out something even more amazing. The US (and other countries) dumped munitions (including German ordinance and chemical weapons like mustard gas) into the sea from at least the '40s until the 1970s, including the Gulf of Mexico.

Now, do you feel any better?

<edit> and an unexploded torpedo...didn't see that one Tigerholic.

There is all kinda crap on the sea floor in the GOM. That's why you are required to do a sonar survey before doing any work that touches the mudline, laying a pipeline, etc.

Exxon found a sunken German submarine a couple of years ago. I've only found a bicycle...

It's been a while... but about 80 miles out, maybe 250ft water (?). I do remember it being about 50 yards from the platform. Old platform. I bet there was a cool story behind it...
