Discovery Well

I heard a rumor that this was just a discovery well and they were within a week of capping it and moving on. So BP had no plans on producing this well right now just wanted to see what they found and test it and make plans for a permanent rig out there. Anyone know if this was the case?

Completely false. This well was the first of multiple wells to be drilled in this find. It was a major find, which they were going to announce after the Horizon pulled off of it. It is a subsea well which requires a separate, more specialized boat to come in and place a tree. then, flowlines have to be laid, and all of the infrastructure has to be put in place before any production can come from it. So, while it is true that BP wasn't going to produce this well for a while, it's not true that it was a "discovery" well.

Uhh what? This was the first well drilled in the prospect and confirmed the presence of hydrocarbons. Thats what qualifies it as the discovery well. The future utility of the well has nothing to do with it. Since these wells cost so damn much BP decided to TA the well and suspend it for potential future tieback as a producer.

this is a common operation in deepwater drilling
