Every floater is shut down not just the deep water ones. Every rig my company owns that is in the the gulf is shut down, including 2 new ones.

Mu compnay renegotiated the contracts to several of the rigs to go on a reduced day rate until the freeze is over then resume the contracts with extensions.

I talked to my State Rep a a couple weeks ago and he said Obama wants to make new regulations that will shut down the whole gulf coast. He wants third party testing and inspections but there is no one able to do this type of work.

I know that my company will try and send as many rigs as it can overseas. I have also heard the same thing about Diamond because I know a lot of guys that work for Diamond. I also fly with a couple crews from Brazil.

the movement in the total rig number is heavily influenced by jackups leaving the GOM and heading to Mexico, West Africa, etc chasing higher day rates. These were the rigs drilling wells on the shelf. the progression of shelf opportunities getting more marginal as dayrates increased had been driving this movement.

What's telling is the # of rigs working in +1500' of water. This is where the frontier of the GOM is, and this is where the large discoveries are being made. This is where the production that is replacing the diminishing shelf output comes from.

1500' is a little shallow in this particular rig count, and seeing a breakdown of the activity in ~3500' and greater would be even more telling.

A number of older, lower spec semi's have gone the way of the jackups that i described above, specifically going to brazil, along w/ a few higher spec semi's. however, the # of high spec rigs and newbuilds working the ultra deep continued to increase as the activity level in the ultra-deep water increased.

Only a handfull of Americans (Expats) will go with these rigs and then they will slowly get replaced with much cheaper local people. Also add in the service companies that service these rigs that have been set up in Brazil for quite sometime. Haliburton, Schlumberger, etc...
I worked in Brazil for 2 years. I was replaced.

Most of those contracts with those countrys make it so that they eventually have to hire all locals to work them. Buddy went to Africa, basically got everything up and running and trained all the men who ended up taking his place.

Since there was some talk about the jack ups

Thanks for all the great info.! Really pisses me off how Obama can just sit back and destroy so many peoples lives and not give a crap.

And don't get fooled into thinking he really believes this is needed. Because if he did he would have accepted proposed allowances to allow drilling without drilling into the oil reservoirs.

Diamond is moving all or most of there Deepwater floaters

I do know this about Diamond--we just a fax (yesterday, maybe day before) for a qoute on items to buy instead of renting, I was told "it has a strong chance of (items) getting lost over there"

"Just about every rig sitting in the Gulf right now is trying to find a way to get out of the Gulf," said Louis Raspino, chief executive of drilling contractor Pride International Inc. (PDE). "In a very, very short period of time we're going to see this industry implode," he said Wednesday at a gathering of the International Association of Drilling Contractors in Houston.
