So far, BP has told federal agencies that it has applied more than 400,000 gallons of a dispersant sold under the trade name Corexit and manufactured by Nalco Co., a company that was once part of Exxon Mobil Corp. and whose current leadership includes executives at both BP and Exxon. And another 805,000 gallons of Corexit are on order, the company said, with the possibility that hundreds of thousands of more gallons may be needed if the well continues spewing oil for weeks or months

This is heartbreaking to sit here and know this shite is happening, our Federal Government sits back as if they are scared to take a stand.

This is BPs responsibility. However the govt needs to dictate what they can use though and force the issue with cleanup.

In grand isle there is a shite ton of army national guard staying at the marine lab. Hopefully BP will be paying for their time.

It is hardly surprising that oil companies have an equity stake. Nobody else was investing in it, they had to.

Yes, it is a cozy little clique but it's hardly an evil plot. The various oil exploration companies (contrary to what people seem to think) knew that one day, they might need dispersant. The problem of course is that this isn't exactly a big market unless there's an emergency.

So they join forces to fund a company that makes the dispersant and keep it alive until such a time that it is needed.

There's nothing nefarious about this, it's just the only way they can get dispersant manufactured "just in case". Basically, Nalco is an insurance company taking fees from the oil company investors. The market for dispersant isn't a thriving one unless there is a spill so there isn't any other way to do this.

Not exactly a "niche" company.

More than 11,500 Nalco employees operate in 150 countries supported by a comprehensive network of manufacturing facilities, sales offices and research centers to serve a broad range of end markets. In 2009, Nalco achieved sales of more than $3.7 billion. For more information visit www.nalco.com.
