or starters they could sell the assets they just bought from Devon recently for $7 billion. I'm sure they have similar non core asset packages all over the world that could be marketed for cash.

So then they are in fact a profitable entity that could attract a takeover?

The US arm of a MASSIVE international conglomerate is going to be subject to a hostile takeover...WOW.

No, they are financially sound, the market is reacting to morons who think they are going to go bankrupt. Short the stock, then hold for two years and get P A I D.

Oh and is the federal govt not seeking an injunction to stop those dividend payments?

Other than it's illegal, and the fact as another poster pointed out that the British Government may have an issue with the US Government interfering. You people have been drinking the Obama kool-aid.

I've been shorting right along after the spill...been getting paid, and when they go back up to the 50-52 range...I'll enjoy the free money market reactionaries have provided.

In bankruptcy, the company doesn't decide what to pay....Geesh, read people, read.

Not to mention the endless shareholder lawsuits that would result. Charles Schumer actually had the audacity to write a letter to BP recently in which he suggested that it was "unfathomable" that BP continue paying dividends. The fact a United States senator feels he can decide how a corporation should act financially should be extremely alarming.

Then explain to me how the Government has ANY control over how a business deals with dividends in relation to their shareholders....

Again, I'll wait for a response.

Just to clarify, I was looking for input not attempting to argue. Some posters here are able to share opinions without feeling the need to belittle others. Congratulations on your profits from the oil spill, I wish I had been able to turn this disaster into a positive bottom line. Unfortunately, my condo is on the beach and so my concern about BP remaining financially sound is a tad bit more personal. In so far as a takeover, I am not sure what parameters make that possible...that would be why I ended the thought concerning a take over with a question mark. Where is hidden flask when you need him? He could at least answer a question with some degree of civility...

BOOM.

I'm excited by this, the market is very predictable concerning BP right now, and those smart enough to realize are making a KILLING.
