In the Bay. Sorry for the bad pics.....divers were in the water and appeared to be anchoring booms.

As mentioned in previous post....a ship continues to patrol just off shore. Still not sure if thats oil related but I've come here the last 4 years and never saw this before.

Any word on Pensacola. Are they closing the beaches?

Tar balls started washing up today. They are talking about only closing affected areas, but this is just the first little wave of the stuff. A big slick/ formation is just 30 miles off the coast, as of yesterday. Once that gets here, you can bet the beaches will be closed.

If you are going for sure, I saw someone else post in another thread, that they took their family to Blackwater river. I completely forgot about it. If the beaches are closed, I would say check it out. I have been before (actually went in March of this year), and it is a good time. They have canoes and kayaks for rent. About $20 a person. They have an different trips you can take. Unless you have little kids, I recommend at least the day trip because the short trip takes less than three hours if you stop a couple times and paddle at a normal rate. There are different white sand beaches along the river you can stop at, as well.

Archie, that was me who posted it ... we had fun even as it poured down rain on us. We did the short trip 1 1/2 - 2 hours leisure paddle time ... could have done the long trip.

Family of 5 ... needed 2 canoes. $85 ... brought ice chest, ate in the pavillion and played on the sand bars ... was a good time. You can also go tubing.

We also rode out to Fort Pickens ... my boys 17 & 12 even daughter 9 enjoyed that. $8 entrance into the park, good for 7 days.

Thanks. Great post. I live in Gulf Breeze, and I forgot all about Blackwater River, even though I just went recently. Fort Pickens is fun to check out the historical stuff, even if the gulf side of the beach is closed.

Thats sucks. I lived right by the harbor and dive right by the jetties there in the pic on a weekly basis. That really sucks...

Just left today. Saw 2 18 wheelers of boom headed east while I was on I-10 near pensacola exits.

Also boom was deployed in Mobile bay....could see it from the I-10.

I guess I should clarify. It was red boom that was between patches of marsh....not the whole bay. I would think they are ready to do that if necessary.

im sitting in my condo in the harbor right now and we were in the pass talking to the guys doing the boom in the pass. they are from nevada with a company called h20 environmental. They are being put up in the emerald grand. It is ready to go so they can stop it from getting in the back bay. Navarre has oil tar balls on it right.

back9tiger, Are there any coast guard with those guys.....I thought I saw some but was not sure because I did not see a CG boat.

I wonder who is directing them. Also if you get a chance ask em if that ship offshore.....patrolling back and forth has anything to do with the oil.

Wow. I'm gonna try to go out there tomorrow, just to see what it looks like. I almost don't want to see it messed up.
