Youth Football Drills

My son just took interest in playing football going into seventh grade. He has started practicing with the team but is way behind since he has never played and most kids have already been playing for years. I'm not trying to turn him into a 5* athlete but he want's to get better and ask what he can do away from practice. Any advice on training drills or how he can improve?

Football players are born, not made.

1. No water
2. Up downs until he pukes
3. Bull in the ring with blind hits
4. The board drill: line up straddling a 2 inch x 10 inch x 10 feet board and go against kids 4 to 6 years older or adults in a blood cling drill
5. Oklahoma drill: except he would carry the ball without a blocker against 4 tacklers

Best thing for him right now is to work on technique and footwork. If he plays along the line, make sure to work with him on his stance every night. Walking through the proper footwork and hand position at his age seems tedious and pointless but it pays huge dividends, trust me.
Edit: and sometimes, a kid just doesn’t have “it”. Not everyone is cut out to be a Football player.

Exercise (Fitness and stamina focused workouts)
and Stretch.
Everything else will come in time.

Have him take up golf.
Football is for real.

I wish I knew these drills but I never played going to a school that didn't have football.

I’ve coached elementary and middle school. A couple of tips.
Work on tackling with a bag or something. He can’t be scared to hit.
At that age, aggressiveness makes a big difference.

Yeah I agree, he is just now learning this stuff and aggressiveness is something he just hasn't developed. I think some of this comes with more practice and confidence.

As a guy that coached several years as well, I completely agree with this. Attitude (the kids w/the mean streak) controlled a lot at that level. My kids were 4/5 grade, so a little younger than 12, but I’d think it’s even more prevelant at that age, as some kids will be half way grown at 12, and other kids still babies. As such, the tougher, more aggressive kids tend to excel.
Another poster suggested a ton of running. Agree with this too. Being able to not be tired late in practices will only help at any age.
At 12, he’ll find out pretty quick if he’s cut out to be a player or not. I love the game, but wasn’t cut out to play it - and was still a really successful coach, to the extent anyone’s successful coaching 10-11 year olds.

What kind of position are we talking about?
Lineman? Defense? Running back? Quarter back?
Agility and footwork drills are great for skill positions. Ropes, ladders, cones, etc. Very easy to do at home.
If defense/lineman, stance, strength, tackling fundamentals are key.
Any conditioning or strength drills are great too. 7th grade he can start gaining some muscle doing body weight exercises, maybe light lifting, etc.

Jesus Christ man, at 12 some don’t even have hair on their nuts. Why not just let them develop then decide if they’re “cut out” to be a player.
Tom Brady and Drew Brees didn’t play football until they were both in high school

These days, I’m sure that there are videos on YouTube that can help. At what position(s) do they have him?

How he plays now means nothing....
Get him flexible and with good stamina and core strength.
He still has a lot of developing to do physically.
