I was recommended to get braces, but never did. My teeth turned out fine, except for recently (30 years old) when I started pushing them with my tongue when I sleep. Hoping this Invisalign will get it back in check, but they were perfectly straight up until a year ago

My 5 yo is getting veneers next week. She will lose them next year but we will redo them 1 by 1

Quit wearing mine after ten years because I lost it and my bottom teeth moved. Sucks.

Parents aren't getting bilked out of money getting braces for their children any more than they are getting bilked out of money from Disney vacations and Ford King Ranches.
I would argue that pretty much everything we do in dentistry, with the exception of treating pain and swelling that could be life threatening, is elective. The dentists presents the proposed treatment and rationale for doing said treatment, the patient or parent decides and a transaction is or is not made.
No patient should ever be belittled for not accepting treatment recommendations and if they feel pressured in any way, they should seek out a second or even third opinion.

My daughter had 2 phases of braces also. She had a bad thumb-sucking habit that has caused her palate to be malformed. Phase 2 was finished when she was 13, and her teeth are gorgeous now. Plus, she will not have to wear braces in high school.
It was worth every penny.

My wife works for an ortho. The doctor does amazing work. Yes some cases are less extreme than others, but the finished products are amazing. It's not a racket.

A lot of it is built on fear tactics, they tell kids and parents and middle aged women if you don't get this $4,000 bullshite your teeth will sink into your bones and through your lips and your jaw will crack open. Somehow we survived 10,000 years as a species without these things happening on any regular basis whatsoever.
It's just common sense that not that many kids have crooked teeth, compared to how many get braces. It's common sense that not that many people have major orthondontic abnormalities. And it's expensive. And it's easy to sell, it comes with the official government-approved seal of medical quality.
Don't be naive.

Parents can be just as much of a problem, 35 years orthodontics was recommended only when the patients teeth were outside of what was considered a normal range of alignment, they could be cosmetically not perfect and still be considered normal, today many parents will accept nothing less than perfect teeth for their kids.

That stereotype is passe. The Brits fixed their issues in the 90s.

It was what Doug Wilson, the Inspector General of Texas Health and Human Services, calls a "pay and chase" environment. Texas now is earnestly in the "chase" mode. It has between 300 and 400 open investigations. Wilson took over the Office of Inspector General in 2011, and after a series of WFAA stories exposing questionable Medicaid payments, the state is beefing up its investigation of Medicaid fraud.
"Texas is a huge state. There are a lot of kids out there," Wilson told News 8 in a lengthy interview last month. "Some of the things we're seeing are just errors and other things that we're seeing are more intentional. And we're taking appropriate actions and making referrals as necessary."
The state now is holding payments back from 91 Medicaid providers for Credible Allegations of Fraud. Dozens are dentists and orthodontists.
The first signs of trouble were in 2008. That's when an audit by the OIG revealed problems.
"The volume of prior authorizations (for spending on braces) was extremely high," Wilson says.
