China held one of those Communist military parades yesterday to celebrate. Those things always make me chuckle.

I new a older gentlemen several years ago that was on the battleship when Japan signed the surrender. He was watching from one of the upper decks/platforms..

He told the story that a big reception was planned below deck after the signing to celebrate the end of hostilities. However the Japanese representatives resisted participating which was quite surprising/puzzling to the the US officials. Later it was discovered the Japanese representatives thought they were being escorted below deck to be shot.

Japan was such a different culture back then.

My great uncle was the navigator on the first plane to land into Tokyo Bay for the treaty ceremony, carrying the staff of Admiral Nimitz. His navigation chart is at the Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola along with the plane. The plane was also used by Howard Hughes.

I knew a dude that worked on a refueling ship out in the pacific. He was on a ship that held thousands of gallons of jet and deisel fuel. He said that his ship would be out in the middle of nowhere and theyd never see land for at least a year, and they wouldn't even see another ship except for every 2-3 months. So they were isolated and they had the stress of knowing they were a high target for the japanese and if they got attacked, they were goners.

after he got out of the navy, he's never set foot on another boat ever since.

Wrong, sir. Although we were in the initial stages of testing the P-59, our first jet fighter, it wasn't operational and certainly wasn't in the PTO. With that said, jet fuel wasn't invented then.
