The happy times were the battle of Atlantic. And the gaps between U.K. and Canadian protection of convoys due to failures in tech, logistics, and temporary uncracked changes in code.

The Germans and allied bombers wish they had our Pacific fleet success after we got our torpedoes straightened out. With a much smaller group of subs we destroyed Japanese shipping to starvation of everything levels. UK was just sometimes uncomfortably short of civilian stock due to military priorities.

At the beginning of the war, one of the few areas that we're exempt from the blackout rules was Miami and the southeast coast of Florida for morale purposes (since it was a vacation area for the rich). Uboats feasted for that short time with ships silhouetted against the coast.
