Just playing devil's advocate here, but maybe the guy actually worked on himself with the provided assistance and changed for the better. Some of these kids grew up with little to no structure. Our legal system should work to actually attempt to "rehabilitate" people, so if he has been on the straight and narrow, society is better served by rewarding his good behavior (within reason) instead of stigmatizing his past. I understand you have to be cautious with people that have prior convictions, but our system is broken.

That's setting the bar high

The previous winners of that award are probably throwing theirs in the trash now.
