Respectfully, your statement is bullshite. One of my friends is an electrician for a medium sized locally owned non union shop. We live in fairly high cost of living area. Him and a lot of his coworkers have seemed to accomplish their goals of living a comfortable life. They will never be rich but they are able to provide for their family.
Maybe your thinking of your average construction site grunt that does struggle. There is a reason general labor jobs are filled with immigrants.

I did a little research and the contractor mentioned in the article has openings for tig welders with 10+ years experience at $27.49 an hour which is $57,000 a year or 84% of what they offered a junior in High School LOL. There is something not exactly right about this story but it feels good so don't question the veracity....
Not sure what's going on in philly but down here in south Louisiana, welders make much much more than that. Journeyman welders (+/-10 years experience, so roughly 30 years old) can make $40-$50/hr. With overtime and per diem they are clearing 150k/year. The senior level highly skilled guys make $60+/hr. Down here, if you are willing to travel and work overtime, tradesmen can make damn good money and still have good benefits like health ins, 401k, etc.

Most likely...or an Uncle....or the company simply doesn't really exist.
If we give him the benefit of the doubt, which I’m not inclined to do, that also probably assumes 500+ hours of OT+ per firm, etc.
Again, is that a better gig than McDonald’s? Of course, but all these posters act like it’s the pinnacle of the workforce, which is just total bullshite
7 years ago I earned just a little bit shy of $350k. I have a BS degree in Electrical Engineering Tech (a trig based engineering degree opposed to a calculus based degree) and a BA in Project Management. I am a licensed electrician in several states and have been in or around the building trades my entire career. To make that kind of money I worked 7 days a week, 12-14 hours a day. All straight time while the folks who reported to me made time and a half and double time 'cause they are smarter than me LOL. This is simply a fact of life. In a 12 month contract I worked just over 2000 OT....40 hours 52 weeks is 20280 so I worked, in essence, 2 years in one and made what amounted to about $170K a year. This is how the trades operate. It is FINE when you are young but even at 25 it wears the body out. Again, you won't hear Mike Rowe and his gand discussing this....it is a brutal way to earn a living.

Ah yes, you’re one friend and his supposed coworker prove the mountains and mountains of data wrong. Some of you are so fricking stupid, truly shocking stuff

That’s 500 hours of overtime, never taking a day off, and either working 10+ hour shifts or picking up weekends.
This shite is like posting an example of a 23 year old investment banker in manhattan making $400k their first year out of college. Is it possible, obviously yes, there’s the example, but it’s so far out of the normal outcomes it’s not even worth discussing. I mean, just idiotic stuff

Average wages for welders in Louisiana is around $48,743 according to multiple sources including the BLS and Louisiana Department of Labor. According to the latter 75% of welders in Louisiana make $44,000 a year.
In order to make $150K a year at $60 an hour a person would have to work almost 133% of a full time year or basically 6 days a week.

Don’t I recall you started out blue collar job and worked your way up? Maybe you can weigh in.
I started working in the warehouse a month after coming off active duty in the early 90s. My starting pay was $5.50 an hour. Moved into Parts Dept after 5 years and then into Product Support as a rep in the early 2000s. Promoted to Product Support management as product manager over wear parts (undercarriage & GET) with responsibility over Alabama and the Florida panhandle in 2021.
As for guys in the trades, welders with my company can expect to make six figures or close to it after a few years plus the benefits they get when hiring on.

I work for a PE that is acquiring a bunch of small family owned HVAC/Plumbing companies. Most of the former owners are seemingly average intelligence and management skills but they are cashing out with anywhere from 2-15 million depending on size of company.
If these kids have just a bit of entrepreneurship and get licensed eventually, they could retire at 30 and be well set.

There’s jobs posted right now by Cat for welders in GA that require 3 years experience that pays $24-30 an hour.

That’s as out right for starting pay, key word there being “starting”. Unless they suck, they’ll be on track to top out far higher than that with regular pay raises.

You’re a fricking idiot. It’s verifiable information. There’s literally hundreds of jobs posted by the very company, and none of them pay what you state a new welder makes. NONE OF THEM. And nearly every one of them require 3-5 years experience.

Not at Caterpillar or Kubota either one. They hire welders in those plants in Georgia at a level of skill that will enable them to do the work on day one. If the welder wants to make more than a COLA every year they will have to go somewhere else. I know a BUNCH of people who work at both and what they hire in at is about what they make....almost no "merit" raise, they do get COLAs annually. The welding that is done there is not highly technical.....

Are they welding on the assembly line? Would imagine that would cut out the travel.

Your comprehension is not very good. I said there are multiple electricians at that one company who make comfortable wages. Some of the spouses work to make thing more comfortable some do not. I personally know around 25 of the guys. (Not one as you stated) I dont know many of their financial situations but they seem to be getting by.
You also mention mountains and mountains of data but I don't see a link to any of it.
Then you mentioned how shockingly stupid I am.
What is truly shocking to me it that you have 29K post on this social media site. What a waste of time for you and all of us who have to read your shite opinions.
Usually the loudest guy in the room is the dumbest, and you are one of the louder on this site.
Get a life before calling others stupid. There is more to life then Tigerdroppings for most of us. But you don't seem to have other things going on.
It makes me sad for you how you think your opinions on this site are important. They are not.

You’re such an idiot you’re comparing STARTING pay and acting like that’s why those guys will make the rest of their lives. They get pay raises every six months until they reach top pay. After that they get annual raises.
You’re making a complete arse of yourself and you’re too stupid to realize it.

Employers beware! These juniors will drag this MF up in a heartbeat, especially the ones who can weld anything from the crack of dawn to a broken heart.
Even if they can fit for four welders and weld for four fitters, they’ll give 2-day notice, as in they are quitting to-day. They got five calls yesterday for another job.

I’m talking about welders in our machine shops and also who work in the field. The field guys especially make good money, well into six figures.
I think Mingo the little Bitch is just insecure to know some trades guys makes as much, or more, money as he does.
