From an evolutionary viewpoint, there's really not much of a distinction regarding race or ethnicity.

OP, while technically all human species originated in Africa before dispersing around the world, african-american usually means someone whose ancestors emigrated within the last few hundred years.

To be fair, evolution is trashy. Thank God (whom I believe in) Livingston Parishites never evolved - could you imagine the level of trashiness there?
