I used to watch Spartacus, and while that was a fairly entertaining show, I just couldn't watch that in real life. Maybe Im soft but my stomach couldnt handle watching people kill each other, even if they are POS.

I may have had the stomach to watch when I was younger but I dont think I could watch now.

First off they trained. There were tons of gladiator schools all over the Roman Empire. Gladiators didn't go into the arena on their first day. They also didn't get killed very often, they were too valuable. The people that actually died in any significant number in the arena weren't actually trained gladiators. Most of the gladiators weren't even slaves just ex-army etc people that wanted to prove their worth via combat. Most of the fights were very tightly refereed with men of similar size and experience and stopped when one was seriously injured. Even women fought in the arena.
