Myself and a couple of other buddies had an intervention with one of our very good friends who was about to bring a girl he met while stationed in Korea to America to marry her. She barely spoke English and the way he described things we just kind of got the sense she was using him.
It was not an easy conversation and there were a lot of reassurances that we'd support whatever decision he made and would definitely treat her respectfully as long as she treated him respectfully. Between those reassurances, though, were plenty of question and points he clearly hadn't considered.
Ultimately, he ended up breaking up with her before she ever made it to the US. He's happily married to the absolute love of his life now so I think we did a good thing by intervening.
