Don't know if this has been said, but not only is it a hipaa violation for this doc to say anything about your friends condition, but it is a violation for him to even look at her medical record if he has no reason to do so. And the electronic medical record (EMR) will have an audit trail of who has accessed her record and when.

So, she should be able to prove that he accessed her record. And if he used that info with malicious intent, I am sure a lawyer would love to take that case.
