Anyone who doesn’t think McArthur was an incompetent commander during the Korean War needs to watch Indy’s newest TimeGhost series on the Korean War.

Arrogant? Yes. Incompetent? No. He was constrained by the politics of the time and the still very fresh scars of WW2. He was absolutely correct about China with the exception of his belief in total war against China because it would have drawn in the Soviets

Westmoreland’s strategy of bombing the North and killing the VC at numbers they could not sustain did work when he wasn’t constrained by political pressure. The US would have won the war after TET had the political leadership counter attacked like he had wanted. The Viet Cong was pretty much tapped out as a fighting force in the South. The problems in Vietnam had more to do with the war itself not William Westmoreland
This^^^ McNamara/johnson were the problem.

We wouldn't even have been in that situation had Truman et al listened to Chennault and supported Generalissimo Chiang against Mao and the Chinese communists at the end of WWII.
As for MacArthur, while he was absolutely correct about China as related to the Korean War, I get the general feeling that maybe he was suffering a bit from an Emperor/God complex after having been the head of state during the years he oversaw Occupied Japan.

Robert E. Lee belongs on this list. Appomattox was a bloodbath as will as his strategy of raiding the North.

Lee lost 500 killed and wounded in the Battle of Appomattox. The other 29,000 or so were surrendered and paroled but that was due to the fact that he had come to the end of the road against a superior force.
