How are the people in the surrounding areas? I'd like to try and deer hunt as much as possible. Maybe try and meet some locals that would let me hunt their property.

I was there once. You can tell it was probably a thriving and cool town in the mid 20th Century. Definitely fallen on hard times.

My family is from there and everyone has fled the region, for multiple reasons. My father graduated from the university in town and my grandfather taught at Youngstown State. My parents hated the cold and fled to Florida and then LA. The town is rough. I'd use the same thought as NOLA: if it looks dangerous, that's because it is dangerous. At one point Youngstown was a well known mafia town. So you might have a decent chance of good Italian food. Lots of golf in the region and close enough to amusement parks for weekend trips.

This is pretty accurate. I have family in the area (Struthers, Poland, Columbia area) and have visited as recently as 2013. They have some really nice golf courses and pizza . . . other than that, stay home. It is a pretty depressing area and there is very little local talent to look at. Drive to Pittsburg if you want entertainment.

The politics there are as screwed up as they are in Louisiana . . . and the mafia is still a viable entity there.

Plenty of places to hunt and fish. Should be no problem at all for you. You could get a tag in OH & PA and double-up.

I'll be on the East side of Lake Milton. How receptive would people be to me knocking on their door to hunt?

My ex is from there. It's a shite hole, and I know what of I speak, having grown up a half hour from Flint.

The best thing I can say about Youngstown is that it's an easy drive to Pittsburgh's airport. And there's some decent Italian-American food.

I worked in that area for a few months 6-7 years ago. Youngstown is pretty rough. Like Detroit rough actually. I'd definitely live outside of the city. Warren is slightly better. Hermitage, PA is fairly nice but I'm not sure how that works tax wise. New Castle, PA is decent too

Sounds like you'll be around N.Jackson / Berlin Center area. Nice and rural. As for knocking, some people are cool, just ask. Others are arse-hats.
