We have an 80 year old house we're in the process of remodeling. They're about to get started on the floors and they want to know what type of finish we want. I'm stuck between wax and poly. They're suggesting wax because it won't show scratches, but it seems like a lot of upkeep. Which is better and why?

You do not want a pristine floor. You want a level of distress where a new mark or scratch is hardly noticeable.

Don't know anything about wood floors. If you have any questions about morning wood post them here.

If you have pets I'd go with polyurethane.

Google was the first place I went. Looking for people with personal experience. I've read quite a few articles. I just can't decide if waxing will be a total pain in the arse or not.

Wood floors in my house are thirteen years old now and have been through a lot. New floors look great, then they get a little banged up and look like shite and you get kind of pissed. Then that passes and you don't give a shite, that is when all is right with the world. Love my wood floors and will never have carpet.

Assuming you are talking about original pine or oak floors, I would go with wax. I had a couple of old house with those floors and up keep was no more effort than tile floor. We would mop them as needed and once a year apply a floor wax. we had pets and little kids, as long as you don't let spills stay on the floor for a long time they handle that kind of abuse really well.

there are hard wax oil finishes that are buffed or troweled on and penetrate the wood and has isocynate mixed in with the oil that makes the finish hard, and there are finishes that will leave the wood natural looking no sheen at all and water based finishes that will not or amber over time and you have cheap polyurethane that will only last 8-12 years. Ask them what brand and what products they use. If they do shite work and the finish fails in a few months you will have to move all of your furniture and your family out while the work is being done. I would suggest going to the NWFA website to find a contractor.
