They don't pull vehicles out of rivers when they are found?
The current Fire Chief is basically saying they screwed up. Looks like hew as in that position in 2022 - though sort of laying it on the dive team's leaders?

Elgin Fire Chief Robb Cagann spoke on the matter and said not enough was done to investigate the vehicle’s presence in the water. "When this information came to my attention, I immediately met with Elgin Police Chief Lalley to discuss the incident,” Cagann said. “Upon careful review, I concluded that more should have been done in 2022, including a comprehensive underwater examination of the vehicle.” He added that he has since investigated the incident and changes will be made to avoid oversights like this in the future. He said since 2022, the fire department’s dive team has gone through administrative changes, including adding new leadership and updating operational protocols.

yeah, not sure what that meant
We now know where she was, but what were the circumstances as to how she got there?
That’s still a lot to uncover.

The fire department's dive team "prematurely" concluded that it was a smaller vehicle in the lake, and the police weren't notified
Yeah, just your standard car in the water in a small town, in the same vicinity possibly driven, where a girl has been missing for 50 years. Why bother to report it. That’s way too much paperwork.

He could also mean why in the world did they not search the river way back then.
Side imaging technology makes a world of difference nowadays when it comes to this.
My oldest son has found a couple of vehicles in a creek off of the Cooper River, downstream from a boat landing in 30’ of water with side imaging while bass fishing. Police pulled them out, they were stolen vehicles that’d been dumped, but they’d been there for years.

Back then more people drove blinding drunk. Its possible she over drank and passed out while driving.

Theres a YouTuber he goes around revisiting old missing person cases. He likes the ones where they were presumed to be driving and he scuba dives and uses some kind of newer under water radar or something.
A lot of small towns dont have the resources to scuba especially back in the day.
He finds a lot of missing people by finding cars in water.

Same thing happened in Auburn a few years ago. A baw worked at a bar in 1976. Had a few drinks before he left work late one night and was never seen again. Police investigated for years and even arrested people they thought responsible.
A few years ago they found his car in a creek about 10 feet off a road. It had been there since 1976 and his bones were in the driver's seat. He had simply ran off the road.
