This coming week marks the 155th anniversary of Major General William T. Sherman's infamous "March to the Sea." Sherman and his 60,000-man army set out from Atlanta on November 15, 1864, with the intent of reducing everything in their path to smouldering ruin. The Union army carved out a 60-mile wide path of destruction from Atlanta all the way to Savannah, Georgia - which they captured on December 20.

While this was going on, John Bell Hood and his Confederate Army of Tennessee marched into Tennessee with the hope of inflicting enough damage on the Union rear to force Sherman to turn back. Unfortunately for Hood, he ran into George Thomas's Union Army of the Ohio at the Battles of Franklin and Nashville. The latter battle resulted in the complete annihilation of Hood's army.

155 years later, Sherman's March remains among the most controversial campaigns of the American Civil War.

I am aware. We were founded in CENLA as a military school and I believe our colors were Blue and White.

"I will say then that I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races--that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of Negroes, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermarry with white people; and I will say in addition to this that there is a physical difference between the white and black races which I believe will forever forbid the two races living together on terms of social and political equality. And inasmuch as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man in favor of having the superior position assigned to the white race."

Sherman planted the seeds of a bitterness that persists in the South to this day.
