I don't think you understand what world War means.
A conflict contained in Europe that is over before we get involved is not a world war
If that's what you think then I hope no one is paying you to think. do you think literally every nation in the world has to jump in before it's considered a World War? Was WWII not truly a world war because in Europe countries like Spain, Portugal, and Sweden stayed out? In Asia you had countires like Turkey and Saudi Arabia who remained neutral. In the Western hemesphere countries like Argentina, Chile, and Peru stood on the sidelines. Guess WWII has beeen mislabeled.
You totally miss the context of the conversation either through a desire to be "that guy" (an a-hole) or your total lack of even the most basic level of understanding of the subject. The term "World War III" has popularly been understood as a war primarily between Russia and the West, namely Western Europe and the US. My contention is that as things stand today, that war would be over before the US could really even get into it.
We'd be involved, we'd launch air strikes and the woefully too small force we have there on the ground now would fight bravely. But they're too small a force to affect the outcome. They'd either be destroyed, forced to surrender, or driven to evacuate. If you want to see what it would be like, go read up on the Battle of the Phillipines in 1941-42. It would resemble that.

Iran is really ticked.
Oh gosh. I hope they don't hold 50 people hostage again.

This is the only reason Iran matters. But it's a pretty damn big reason....
