When a company in America basic costs of business go up 1 of 2 things happen, they pass that cost directly to the consumer or they start cutting employees and quality. Usually one leads to the other.

Except the customer is already paying the cost.

I didn't deal with your food any faster/nicer because I was hoping for a tip, I did it because it was my job.
Are you European?

That is understood. Rethink my response, it makes perfect sense.

The cost is already there in the tip.

Congratulations? What do you do now? I'll guess you didn't stay in that linen of work for ever

Also, Scruffy doubts quality of service would decrease.
What is one of the main reasons people work in the service industry? Tips...why because they don't claim them all on taxes. Now pay these people a wage that can't be hidden from the IRS and tell me how appealing the job is... Restaurants already have trouble finding good employees so taking away one of the perks would make the job less desirable correct?

Like stingray said, the only people that lose are the ones that aren't tipping, as they now absorb a share of the cost.

I'm an auditor, and very happy I don't audit restaurants anymore.

As a taxpaying citizen, why should I be happy that I'm giving someone money under the table? That's why I never tip in cash, always on the card.

i like that you generally avoided the guy that refers to himself in the third person
the tipping argument seems to be something almost set in stone. sucks

Everyone isn't happier. The restaurant loses business because of increased prices, they either cut food quality, fore employees, or both, and the service declines, leading to an unhappy customer.
Why would a restaurant lose business over increased prices? Is it because John Q Public doesn't understand that he has to add gratuity to the price when he sees it on the menu? I hope the restaurant business isn't staying afloat because of customers getting duped into eating there by low menu prices with hidden tips.
Or are there certain people who, since tipping is not required, don't tip, and thus would not dine at a restaurant which increases its prices? They would be the ones taking the brunt of the pain if tipping is abolished. If these non tippers cause restaurants to lose business, then it's stupid that the good tippers have to make up for their slack. Here's a novel idea, make everyone pay the same damn thing for the same food and service.

You think that makes them claim it? Is there a form that waiters get showing how much they made in tips from CC purchases...not being a dick I am just curious if this is done

I will say, scruffy.. Service in Europe has been not very great in my experience

Think about it...some people can only afford certain restaurants to dine in as it is now correct? Raise the prices across the entire industry and what happens?
