I haven’t gone back and looked, so I wonder how GM positioned Buick and Olds to be different in the 50’s. I know they had different engines and sheetmetal but from a marketing standpoint how did they differentiate those 2 brands? I think Pontiac was already being sold as the ‘sporty’ alternative.

Pricing and amenities for the most part. There were options on Buicks you couldn't get on a Chevy for instance. It was Sloan's ladder where they buyer aspired to own the next brand up as they went through life.

And, every division was essentially completely separate from the others, sharing relatively little.

Today's market is very different in that until you get to higher end luxury there are few if any options you can't get on a Chevy. The lower end lux cars you are essentially buying the badge as little else differentiates it from a "mass market" car.

eta-Pontiacs were known as pretty stodgy cars in the 50's. It wasn't until the Wide Track Ponchos and the marketing with it that it shook that image. The GTO a few years later gave them the youth image.

Cadillac very probably was the engineering standard of the world, but that hasn't been the case in a long time.

1950's

In the 70's when you went to a demolition derby the old Caddy's were the first to be attacked, and many still won in spite of this.

Where GM is failing now is in their supplier network and their never-ending quest for cheaper and cheaper materials.

Solid engines, but knick-knacky interior bits and trim.
I've seen a trend from about 2014 on that they've gotten a bit better, but the debacle that was 2007-2013 is hard to forget.

I hear the new Vette will be better; we'll see.

But as others have said Cadillac interiors are nowhere near Lexus/Jaguar/BMW etc.

I like the V series cars.

To me, the Japanese luxury makes are in the dark days when it comes to styling and design. Lexus, Acura, and Infinity are all meh with an ugly face.

The Cadillac Cimarron came out when I was too young and poor to afford a Cadillac. GM releasing that car and calling it a Cadillac caused me to never ever consider buying a Cadillac.

Agree with all you said, would add that they are underpowered as well.

When considering a hot car it is still 911, F-Type-R, Corvette, and whatever hot BMW is out at the moment.

Lutz, while far from perfect, tried to fix this back prior to '07.

Had to fight tooth and nail to spend $100 more on the interior in the Malibu.

The engineering is generally very good to excellent. The bean counters have been a thorn in GM's side since the 70's, nickle and diming shite.
