MLK day was started as a kind of... thing to make people feel better and feel like the government was more respectful of certain issues. Similar to the adding of a MLK street in every major and minor US city.
There are a lot of holidays we get off for and others we don't.
But the real honest to goodness reason is simple logistics.
You have a heck of a lot more off days in the Fall semester than you do the winter/spring semester. It's easy to take away a day in late winter as there is no thanksgiving or Christmas holidays, just spring break.
So the main reason why is that there are too many off days in the first half of the school year.

Memorial day is more important than Veterans Day. I don't know for sure but I'm assuming that Memorial Day has no school.

Let's honor the brave veterans who lost in Vietnam and stalemated in Iraq and Afghanistan by cancelling classes and having our chillrens fall even further behind the German and Japanese kids.

Mayne, you're like school on the 4th of July. No class.

Wife put on a big Veterans Day program yesterday at her school. Got in the news too. And today schools are closed so win win.

Did you also pitch a fit when there was school on Columbus Day?

He started some shat BUT I personally witness some serious inequalities in those days before he came along. MLK was a great man. His leadership was cut short. If the black people actually lived by what he had to say this country would be much better off for it.
That being said, there certainly are some poorly chosen holidays and some holidays missing from the list.
FYI, I'm not black and certainly not PC.
