Why is the word 'Polish' pronounced differently with different meanings?

I read it as Polish (as in the country) both times. I was very confused as to what this thread was about.
ETA: context matters in English. You'd have to understand very little about the language to get confused within a sentence

English is a weird language. I do not envy any person who has to learn it as a second+ language. The amount of different pronunciations, idioms, contractions, conjugation, etc., is enough to make even native speakers look retarded.
