I've never known any female that was named after her mom.
Even tho I am a Jr. I would look at her and her mom like WTF?! It doesn't make sense, so when the woman gets married does she have to drop the Jr???

There's a rule that says only your last name can be on a jersey? You can put whatever the hell you want on there.
You think the NFL doesn't have rules limiting what you can put on your nameplate?

NFL rules explicitly require "surnames." The rule was relaxed a few years ago, allowing suffixes to accommodate Robert Griffin III.

The whole "naming your son after his dad and grandfather etc." thing is just a little outdated. Traditional, yes, but it gets confusing. My cousin Joseph III ("Joey") just had a boy named Joseph IV. Who gets called what?
Also, historically, having a daughter sharing her mother's name was not uncommon. They just wouldn't have a suffix since eventually they'd have different last names (and for a while, a married woman gave up her entire name as well - Mary Johnson marrying John Smith would become Mrs. John Smith).

Sorry baw, but you never said anything about the NFL.
And you are also wrong.

That's because the NFL, per Uniwatch's Paul Lukas, changed the rules for what was allowable on the back of a jersey. "Jr" and "Sr" and "III" and whatnot may now be stitched on the back of jerseys, whereas it was previously against the rules to do so.

Nor did you exclude them. But Steve Smith Sr. was posted, above.
It's probably just a coincidence that 99.9% of players across all sports have only their last names on their jerseys. There couldn't possibly be any league rules prohibiting "whatever the hell you want."
Why do you think "HE HATE ME" was such a big deal? B/c it was the result of the first time a player was allowed to 'put whatever the hell he wanted' on his name plate.

Or you can't read.

"Surnames of players in letters a minimum of 2½ inches high must be affixed to the exterior of jerseys across the upper back above the numerals; nicknames are prohibited."
Nowhere in this thread did I state there was a rule prohibiting suffixes. But players look stupid with them, b/c they are tied to their first names, not their last names, which are on everyone else's jerseys.

I misunderstood your post.
But still, a player can technically put just about anything he wants on his jersey (outside of vulgar things im sure). I'll let you figure out why.

He actually can't. If he could, you'd probably see a lot more names other than last names. MLB players must get approval from the commissioner for anything but their last names. I expect every other league has similar rules. I think the NBA toyed around with the idea of nicknames a few years ago.
But that's not really the point. The suffixes aren't part of last names. So, when everyone else has his last name on his jersey, it's dumb to add a suffix to yours (unless your dad/son is on the team too). Steve Smith Sr's last name is still Smith. He's Steve Sr. now, but still Mr. Smith. The only time it made any sense was when Ken Griffey Sr and Jr were on the same team.

I'm named after my mom. I just go by J and she goes by her full name.
