As an OOS student in 2008, LSU gave me an absolutely ridiculously good package, no one was even close. Basically made money to attend.

Fun fact: New Orleans is the only city in America with more than 100k residents which takes in more tax payer money than it produces in revenue
That doesn't make sense. Tax money is city revenue.

There's not a lot of incentives to stay in state in Texas for above average students. If you're in the Top 5%, there's a chance UT and A&M will give you something because of their huge endowment. If you fall in between the top 5-20% what are your options? Maybe a scholly to Tech, UH, Texas State, UNT, or a directional school? Outside of that, an SEC school is your best option.

I think he is saying that New Orleans receives more state funding than the residents of New Orleans pay to the state in taxes.

colleges/unviersities are businesses, for-profit businesses
No, they're not. They are public institutions and private nonprofits. There are a few predatory for-profit colleges (e.g., Trump University), but they are the exception.

That's not clear from what he wrote, and I doubt it's true that NOLA is the only city above 100K people in that category.

Show me a college with "make money" in their mission statement.

It’s the personal mission statement of all the administrators who keep getting bigger and bigger raises. Cmon man

My point was the vast majority of colleges and universities are not "for profit businesses," as was asserted. You should know that term actually means something legally and financially.

It’s abundantly clear what he meant and they are for profit for all intents and purposes

Louisiana folks have been very insulated to the costs of state schools. I almost choked when my son told me what his Louisiana roommates were paying (many of whom dropped out BTW because they had no skin in the game) Louisiana has been very generous to you and it shows whenever you laugh at people paying almost $50k per year.

While I agree with the morality of educating one's own residents, Houston is four hours away and has a ton of money (don't even need loans)

Try 50+ years...my roommate in 60's was 4.0 physics major. Couldn't get accepted at LSU grad program. Went to FSU freebie. I think Nash Roberts son had similar experience

There are far, far worse values out there - especially in the midwest and northeast. I don't think some of y'all understand how much worse the costs of higher ed is outside of Louisiana. LSU will likely have over 41,000 students in the fall, many of them from Texas and northern states with far more expensive alternatives for those students. LSU prefers to enroll them over a competitive local applicant because they pay vastly higher tuition to attend.

LSU isn't an amazing university; but for the price it delivers a lot of value....even as an OOS student.

I think the state needs to consider a cap on out of state students as a % of the student body at LSU. 55/45 or 60/40 just to make sure the university exists to serve the local populace but still enable a substantial OOS enrollment to help boost the school's financials and competitiveness.

I graduated from Alabama and don’t know if I like the direction the university is taking. Auburn is getting the instate kids an Alabama is heavily out of state, like 65%. UA is addicted to the out of state tuition. Most of the kids leave Alabama and don’t donate to the endowment.
