I thought it had something to do with Long, or perhaps a predecessor, To not be at days travel away from attending university. And I’m talking a days travel being by horse back in the day. Something like that

Tulane has 13,000 Students
Southeastern has 15,000 Students
Hell Delgado has 19,000 Students

If you close just those 3, the other big schools don't have the facilities to handle those students.

All 3 are vastly different, and who would be closing Tulane? You do know they are private and a large % of their undergrad student body comes from out of state and is non-southern. Delgado is also a CC not a 4 year. Out of the Southland schools SLU is actually the most viable and would be in the last of that group to be merged or closed.

As others have said the answer is politics and geography. For a state our size, LA has many very different cultures. There are some obvious mergers that should/could happen but things like race will never let it happen. (Case and point SUNO/UNO or Southern-Shreve and Grambling) No local politician is going to allow there local university to be closed even if it for the betterment of the state and his constituents.

Also the private universities while they are absolutely a net positive on higher ed (Xaiver, Dillard, Loyola, LC, Tulane, Centenary) they not only take some of the best students that would go to public universities, but funds like Tops still are used there as well.

Truth bomb. Would be much more effective for residents and more efficient to cut several 4 year colleges.
It's less a giveaway to state employees, who have no political clout, than it is an issue of legislators fighting for their regional colleges.
Putting more money into 8-9 state universities, and consolidate the three university systems into one, would free up so much money for higher quality education.

So Tulane can have more schools to look down their noses at and validate the worth of their over-priced degrees.

Loyola is largely a failing school. Costs a fortune and the degree is not worth much. It's the kind of school that will be the first to go if and when the higher ed bubble bursts.

Wow where to begin. Not trying to be a dick, but Loyola is not a "failing school", they have issues no doubt but unrelated to this discussion. Second, its not going anywhere ever, this higher ed bubble you speak of, would love to hear why it would be the first to go and who would close it. You do know it is a private, religiously affiliated university right?

A lot of these Louisiana directional state schools will survive solely based on geography and a lack of other options in those areas. Louisiana is a big state.

Agree with geography being a factor, but this is no longer the 1940's very easy from anywhere in the state for a student to go to LSU. Louisiana is not a big state by any measure, but for a state our size we have a much larger economy and we are vital for a number of reasons to the country as a whole. These directional schools have stayed open and even expanded is because of politics. Not a single state politician would ever close their nearest university.

Nope.

Wisconsin>Louisiana.

Hard working German immigrants greater than UK white trash that populate the south ans Louisiana.

Miller. Pabst. Schlitz. Blatz. Meyer. Five is all I need to dwarf all those from the UK.

Jews, Germans, Scandinavians> UK trash, French, and Cajuns. Fact.

Germans are some of the biggest pussies on earth. They let the women boss them around, and like it.

You know it’s true. If Wisconsin and LA ever had to fight each other, it would look like this:
