When I first read the OP, I thought he was referring to one of these (a church key). I can't remember the last time I needed to open a can with one of these. Bottles, yes, but not a can.

He is probably thinking of the poor lady on the morning News, a couple weeks back.
It was a food bank. The Obese Grandmother was the example for the need of food kitchens for the poor. She was reared by the Food Kitchen, "free food", her children were reared on free food, and now her Grand Children depended on the Food Kitchen.
Then they mentioned, "But what good is food if you don't have a Can Opener". The poor lady needed a Can Opener.
