The better question is why are people religious

I think it's because deep down they know they are living a lie and that is what actually gets them riled up.

That being said, if a person is offended by someone bashing their religion, it is safe to assume that they are insecure in their faith.
It's safe to assume if you bash my religion I'm going to ask to lunch.

Then, in front of everybody I'm going to pray out loud for you as loud as I reasonably can to embarrass the insincerity out if you.

I think they are just offended at you being rude to them. You could care less about their feelings and are purposely trying to hurt them, so they get upset. I think that's how it normally works. Why do you feel the need to be an a-hole to people who otherwise are just trying to get by?

You nailed it!

They get offended at people being *ssholes!

And *ssholes can not see that.

First, we know that the act of, being offended, is an emotional weakness stemming from a person's own insecurities

Do we know that? I don't think we do. I would agree that, for many people, offenses are taken because they trigger their insecurities. But I disagree that insecurity is always the case.

Why did Jesus get offended by the money changers at the temple?

But, all that being said, I do agree with you that, as a Christian, we should not be surprised or offended when people act exactly the way the Bible predicts they will. And taking offense will not likely get them any closer to God.

Christians get offended because everyday that passes religion in general sounds more and more insane. When you say that god doesn't exist what you have essentially done is taken the daily lifeline away from them. They now have to face problems without the idea of some mystical being protecting them.
