They came damned close...had Germany not fricked around and went east and west they probably would be eating brats and speaking german in london today....
You also had a pretty unified nation in England at the time....and it still took a MIGHTY effort by the nation at every level to keep Germany at bay. They weren't a bunch of hunters with no training and no support as posed in the OP....

Country folks are INCREDIBLY resourceful....any fool can make a million $ in Atlanta it takes a damned genius to earn a living in rural Georgia. You are 100% right. I am a rural American and would fit the bill of a Bubba myself....but the people who contend that they can hold off an invading army or even the police with a shotgun, a rifle and a 4 wd are delusional or, more likely, bragging. Many have tried to do the latter, not a one that I aware of has succeeded yet. Americans are, thankfully, too soft from good high living to be much of a threat militarily without some serious training and sophisticated weaponry. Most kids today can't do a pushup....most adults dream of parking in the handicapped space so they don't have to walk another 100 feet to the walmart. Yet they are going to run a military invasion off with their pistols and deer rifles. That was the OPs original point....
