Any estimates for a 1100sqft home?
I can hand wash and hang dry my clothes in the meantime.

And yeah… the person who installed it was an idiot.

Looks like exhaust started a grass fire, which burned the unit, Unit itself was probably fine. Same thing happened to me last night, but with leaves. Leaves were burned from the exhaust. Learned a lesson: rake away dead vegetation from the exhaust discharge. And if the vegetation is alive, it will soon be killed by the exhaust and possibly burned.

Day After Katrina I bought a generac 15kw from Home Depot in lake Charles. Hooked it up myself. All I ever did was regular maintenance to it other than having the valves adjusted last year. Past few years it’s given me some headaches about either not wanting to start up right, choke down and die when a load hit, or not set an exercise routine. It didn’t work at all this storm even though I did maintenance a couple days before the storm.
I went to Texas the other day and bought a 20kw brigs and Stratton from power solution specialist. The guy made me feel much better about buying that than another generac. He tested it before I left with it, told me everything about oil consumption within the first 200 hours, even answered my calls after to make sure I was remembering the wiring corrected. Was a little over $5,800 cash out the door.
Hopefully I’ve got no issues with this one as it has the vanguard engine in it.

Do your research. I’ve heard of numerous whole house generators that have crapped out, some even less than a year old.
My FIL has a Generac that's he's used several times for a few days reliably. He does regular maintenance on it though religiously.

I don't understand why people decide to go cheap on a key item like this. It is the one piece of equipment that can make your such a dramatic difference in your family actually making in through an extremely difficult time in their lives.
Sq Ft has nothing to do with selection here. It is all about amp draw and what exactly you want powered during an outage. As stated, you should look a Kohler as they are rock solid in the industrial space as well. At least 22kw if want to run two ac units along with the rest of the house, minus an electric oven and dryer. They have logic in them now so you can keep two circuits powered and dump the rest of the load, if an overload occurs. I set this up for my ac units, b/c I didn't want those to stop. Look at 1800rpm unit for a lower sound if noise is your concern.
Look at the ground were the exhaust pipes are facing and keep the area trimmed of weeds. I place pavers around this area in order to reduce the amount of combustible items too.

I have a Kohler 20/18 air cooled. So far so good. I don’t like the auto switch. Needs control boards on both the gen and the ats to talk to each other. Bugs, lizards and spiders can easily cause a short and burn them up so it’s super important to keep the housings clean. If I was to do it again I’d go with a manual ng generator and xfer switch. The more automated the system the more possibilities for a problem. I might also look into a liquid cooled option. Of course the liquid cooled Cummins across the street has had nothing but issues.

I have a portable generator that’s whole house…

Can anyone provide color coded directions for making an extension cord connecting a 4 wire twist-lock generator socket to a 3 wire dryer plug?
Time to power up the house without all these extension cords.

Liquid cooled or don’t bother. It won’t last. This is Louisiana not Kansas.

I just priced one for a 7500 sqft home and it was 20k just for the install
I would think so since you must live in a mini-castle. What sized generator are you going to purchase for a house that size?

My generac was $11k installed, 22kw. It works like a charm for last 5 years
I’ve heard similar things elsewhere. It seems like the people who have had Generacs for four or five years work great. It appears that they went cheap in production and the ones after that are shite.

As previously mentioned… it makes a huge difference if the unit is air cooled vs liquid cooled. I think all of these units that are crapping out are air cooled.
