I had a friend in college, and he and his family had defected. I met him at the TOEFL prep where I volunteered (awesome way to meet freaky foreign chicks btw).
He was an interesting guy. He thought all white people looked like Brad Pitt. In every email he ever sent me he referred to me as Brad, but he always typed "Bread."
He loved family guy. His favorite character was Stewie. He would always ask people if they liked Family Guy upon meeting them. He would then ask who their favorite character was, and before you could answer he'd say "Prease say Stewie."
He never really said much about NK, but did say that when he first saw maps of the world in the south he didn't know what he was looking at. In maps they are taught from in school NK is a massive empire that covers most of the world, and SK and the US are tiny nations.

I have heard they get fed a lot of propaganda .
just odd there is still a country like that with how easy it is for the rest of the world to get information.

One of the myths the NK propaganda perpetuated about Kim Jong Il was that the first time he ever played golf, he hit a hole-in-one. They also put out fake video some years ago that purportedly showed the NK soccer team winning the World Cup.
There is also an official crime in NK called "insincere mourning." When Kim Jong Il croaked, the people were expected to prostrate themselves in public before his statures and wail and cry. Some people were turned in by their neighbors because they thought their "grief" was faked, or that others didn't show sufficient grief. That is a weird personality cult they have over there.
