The wife makes care packages for them. Crackers, water, breakfast bars, stuff like that. We have one in Prairieville that always has a child with him so I gave them some money during Christmas.

Or naked and give you clothing? 39 When did we ever see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ 40 “And the King will say, ‘I tell you the truth, when you did it to one of the least of these my brothers and sisters,[c] you were doing it to me!’
if you can give tangible items to the homeless? good
giving them money is terrible and often enabling an addiction (which is why they most often refuse food when offered)

I do, if they are not smoking and/or don't have a pet. I was in Boston and this young 18-21 girl was sitting on the street in the frozen rain. She was obviously very distraught. I was moved and gave her $20. She started crying uncontrollably and was so thankful. It was worth it.

I'll give them a bottled water or granola bar, but not money.

Fantasy. Whatever makes you feel better about being an a-hole.

people have this sort of romantic idea of the homeless

What an awesome reply!! If you can find a justification for your actions in the Bible then someone else can find a contradiction. The Bible speaks to all of us in different ways. The only statement not contradicted are the commandments.
If handing over money, food or clothing makes you feel good and creates love in your own heart then do it. If you think you can buy your way into Heaven this way then you better study your Bible a little more

No. Most of them have alienated themselves from family and friends and that is why they are homeless. I am not going to enable them. The ones who do give just frick it up for the ones who don't.

Whatever assuages your liberal guilt.
All you are doing by giving them money is enabling their addictions and increasing crime in those areas. These aren't "homeless with a heart of gold" types. They're breaking into houses and cars near where they're staying, too.

yeah this is one of those areas where i understand where the initial religious-based reaction comes from, but it's wrong
many times, the religious reaction is not the optimal solution, b/c most of these considerations were analyzed in the bronze age

I know a guy who graduated from a university located in an old part of Chicago. A professor warned the students not to give to the homeless and said many make over $80k per year panhandling.
