My last name is French, I would bet that most people think it’s Cajun. In reality my people are from the Alsace–Lorraine region of France that has gone back and forth between French and German rule over the centuries. As control of the region changed my last name would change from the German word to the French word, and vice versa. When my ancestor came to Louisiana directly from France they went with the French word.
I knew a guy kind of like that. He had a Cajun surname, but when I actually got to know him, I found out that his dad had emigrated from France in like 1970, on a fricking 747. Didn't even bother to get expelled from Canada, trap beavers, or anything. I thought it was weird they ended up in Baton Rouge. Hopefully he wasn't expecting anyone to speak French there.

I’m very much of English descent, not exclusively English, but very English none the less. My last name comes from a village in Cheshire, England and can be traced back to Anglo-Saxon Briton.

My dad thinks our last name is German but it actually has origins from France.

No DNA test needed. I'm 1/4 German. Family was from the Silesia region. Probably some Polish mixed in too as that area has gone back and forth throughout history.

I’m a descendant of a long line of colonizers, and damn proud of it.
