Missing one and it's very unusual bolt that I need to complete a a furniture reassembly. Hardware stores don't carry. Any clues?

Fastenal or most industrial supplies distributor. Do you know the size and pitch that you are looking for, if not Fastenal will be your best option.
Lowes has some common Allen Head Bolts and the are usually in the specialty pull out drawers in the hardware section

Lowes has a specialty hardware section that I would try. Bring in one to match.

they also have the thread gauges to help you determine the size and TPI

I just bought some from Home Depot yesterday. They were in the "specialty fasteners" drawers. I would bet that Ace also has them. I was actually on my way there and decided to give HD a shot as it was less than half the distance.

Would it cause a problem just replacing it with a basic hex bolt?

I. Think the threading is also a bit. Unusual

In my case, I thought the same thing and that was my plan. Then I realized that this bolt was to be installed in a recessed area and there was not enough room for the socket.

If fastenal doesn't have it in stock they can have it for you the next day as long as it isn't something that has to be manufactured.
Have you tried any furniture places?

you're on the internet asking about it instead of on the internet purchasing it...riiiiiight

Lowes first, if not Mcmaster

you are going to have to take it somewhere to determine what the thread pattern is. Then from there it will lead you to know where you can get the bolt, but being that it is a piece of furniture, they tend to run pretty standard thread pitches because it is easier to buy in bulk vs getting a one off or weird pitch manufactured.

Ace
They will make sure you get the exact bolt, plus you're buying local.

Lowes definitely sells them. Search on lowes.com, select store (if haven't), right below price on product page it will tell you aisle and bay where you will find it.
